Darning Workshop with Socko and Offset Warehouse at HARA London

Emma Mathews Wednesday, 6 November 2019

In the UK, the estimated average lifetime for a garment of clothing is 2.2 years. Extending the life of clothing by a further 9 months would reduce carbon, waste and water footprints by around 20-30% each, and would save £5 billion in resources used to supply, launder and dispose of clothing.*

Join us for an intimate Autumn evening as we learn the craft of mending from Emma Mathews of British sock brand Socko. In this 2.5 hour workshop, you'll learn about the history of mending, why it's so important in terms of sustainability and how to darn your own knitted holes.

  • Knitted swatch(es)
  • Cute bundle of ethical and sustainable woven fabrics from Offset Warehouse for patching

After a little bit of time to settle in and enjoy some of Hara's gorgeous bakes, Emma will begin with a short presentation to take you through the history of mending. She'll cover what darning actually is, the types of techniques involved, and why learning the craft is important for the life of our clothing. Emma will then guide you through her particular patient approach to darning, before it's up to you to have a go; you'll choose a knitted swatch, cut a hole in it, and start mending it!

With guidance from Emma, plus Steph from Offset Warehouse, you will gain confidence in darning. Using this first swatch as a technical starter, with the next one you can be more creative using various coloured and thicknesses of yarns. Feel free to bring along a holey knitted garment or two to glean Emma's expert advice on how best to tackle it with darning, and get started on mending it yourself. You can bring along woven garments too, as we can discuss best practice for mending woven fabrics, however in this workshop we'll concentrate on knitting as it tends to be the trickier of the two; using knitted mending knowledge, you can then darn your woven clothing.

You'll be free to chat, move around and purchase further HARA goodies. Steph will also be available should you want to enquire about sustainable and ethical textiles, or about The Sustainable Fashion Collective if you're a designer or business looking to be more responsible.

Workshop teacher: Emma Mathews of Socko

Emma’s dream of Socko began when searching for meaning in her work. She saw that her job satisfaction came when she was able to connect what she’d done with her working day with its positive impact upon others. Through combining her talent for craft with her love of people and planet, she identified her business idea: Sustainable socks. At the heart of Socko is a fundamentally great pair of socks. Designed, sourced and made in the UK: yarn is repurposed from waste in limited quantity ranges, and each pair of socks is packaged with yarn so you can mend them.

Workshop teacher: Stephanie Steele of Offset Warehouse

Steph's background is within fashion and textiles, but her personal craft-based approach to making is curious and experimental. She learnt how to darn from textile artist Celia Pym, and uses the practice as a method in mindfulness.
