Fashion Trend Report Spring and Summer 2017
A look at what's happening for 2017 spring/ summer. Get inspired and plan your style statements for next year.
Rose sand, an almost-warm neutral, is the signature hue for the season. It was widely spotted in a variety of attires ranging from knitwear to swimwear. Another must-have colour is the cheerful and energetic Pacific Blue, which adds a vibrant touch to shirts, tops and dresses.
The neutral shade Ecru is new on the scene and renders itself beautifully to feminine prairie and pastoral dress styles. This season, red appears in warm tones like amber and burnt orange. It is the colour of choice for 70's style looks, and was spotted both as a focus colour and as an accent to energize blues and greys.
An emerging favourite is golden-yellow. This eye-popping colour does well in colour injection with blacks and neutrals adding a vibrant, tropical touch to any outfit. Organic shades of green including moss and olive replaced khaki on the catwalk.
The floral trend continues from previous seasons, but this time on either extremes of the scale, as micro or macro florals. Hand-printed roses and pansies are just as popular as vibrant, tropical colour florals. Foliage prints with leaf and herb patterns add a touch of sophistication to simple outfits.
Stripes in various sizes and vivid colours are another trending print. Expect to see pin, pencil and wide stripes updating standard nautical stripes in traditional shirting and similar loose-fit outfits. Statement tassels add decorative touches to a variety of attires.
Japanese-inspired tiger prints and tribal prints are the other hot favourites. They find their place in skirts and tops, as well as creating a statement effect on accessories like scarves. Sweatshirts featuring vivid fonts are favoured in casual attire for the warm months.
Casual looks seamlessly blend into formal styles this season. The focus is on romantic and prairie looks. Peasant dresses in loose as well as structured styles are very common. Luxurious fabric versions of this outfit are a refreshing dress style for high-end needs in spring and summer. The ruffle blouse is once again popular. Ruffles take on bigger proportions and are placed along the sleeves or as a design feature on cropped tops.
A cool hybrid between skirts and overalls, 'pinafore slips' are a must-have in the SS17 wardrobe. This new style is suitable for festival and evening wear. As casual beach attire, it may be layered with other pieces or worn by itself. Flutedsleeves update crisp shirt dresses.
We will be seeing more emphasis on waistlines this season. Belts and wide straps as accessories, draw focus to this body area in dresses, tops and even jackets.
Another fashionable style is menswear-inspired classic shirts featuring wrinkle-free options. Similarly, next summer will see women rocking boyfriend T-shirts paired with skirts and other feminine pieces. Embellished button-down shirts are a statement wardrobe essential.
Skirts, Pants And Tops
Palazzopants, the light-weight trousers, are a big trend this spring and summer. The focus is on solid colours and bold stripe patterns in this style. All variants of trousers—wide leg, skinny and flare continue to be popular. Nonetheless, the wardrobe essential has to be extra-wide leg trousers.
In jeans, skinny, relaxed-slim, cropped and boyfriend-style are trending. The subtle take on flare jeans, the micro-flare, is another favourite. The cropped kick-flare jeans of last year has been updated with ankle-swing cropped trousers showcasing raw edges, ruffled hems and splits. Skirts with paper bag waists are exaggerated and more fun since we last saw them on the scene.
Woven tops and those with ladder trims in 'peekaboo lace' form perfect pairings for a variety of skirts and trousers. This season's looks are greatly influenced by the 1970's, with voluminous sleeves, soft shapes and sheer fabrics in the forefront.
In outerwear, the choices are both practical and chic. Oversize trench coats fall to knee-length, and camouflage curves while offering coverage. Many versions of these were featured in denim. Lightweight wind breakers are the choice for breezy weather, apart from blazers and coats in sportswear style. One of the hottest trends in outerwear is the “Gucci”effect souvenir jacket. Also in the limelight are bomber jackets with splendid artisanal embroidery.
Efficiently transition from work to weekend with this season's trendy structured mesh skirts and shift dresses. Strategic placement of mesh panelling creates an edgy and interesting effect in tops, shirts, dresses and skirts. Surface decoration with embroidery is also popular. It instantly dresses up a simple outfit and adds to its impact.
